What is Disc?

The term ‘Disc’ is a short form of ‘intervertebral disc’. These are the spongy cushions that separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae). Discs provide shock absorption, keep the spine stable and give the vertebrae ‘pivot points’ to allow movement. Discs have two parts: the elastic outer shell (the ‘annulus fibrosis’), and an inner jelly-like substance (the ‘nucleus pulposis’). The outer shells surrounds and holds the ‘inner jelly’ within the disc core.

Term “Disc Bulge” is used when very small inner portion of the disc moves or bulge slightly out from its position but does not impair the outer layer of the disc.

Symptoms of disc bulge

· Pain near the affected site

· Referred nerve pain (pain radiation into the hands or legs)

· Altered nerve function (numbness or pins-and-needles).

· Depending on the condition and severity they are named differently eg Disc protrusion, Disc herniation, Slipped disc .

Disc bulge can also be asymptomatic which means you may have the bulge from long time but may not show much symptom. Over time it may affect the soft tissues surrounding it and cause pain.

Most of the time the pain you experience is on the muscles and nerves and these can be easily treated through physiotherapy treatment
